One of the most outstanding sons of Deputy Minister, Salt Lake is a grade one winning two-year-old and sprinter who captured five graded stakes. Salt Lake is also the most accomplished proven sires standing in California, siring more than 50 stakes winners, 16 of them graded.
As a Northern Dancer line stallion, it is not surprising to see Salt Lake doing well with mares from the Raise a Native line. He has two stakes winners – one graded – out of mares by Raise a Native’s most important son, Mr. Prospector, and has also sired stakes winners out of mares by Mr. Prospector sons Afleet, Gold Stage and Two Punch, and grandson, Cryptoclearance (by Fappiano). Raise a Native is also sire of Exclusive Native, a horse from Deputy Minister’s own family, and Salt Lake has sired two stakes winners, including Champion Fantasy Lake, out of mares by Exclusive Native’s son, Affirmed. From another branch of the Native Dancer line, we can also note Salt Lake as sire of a graded stakes winner out of a mare by Sharpen Up.
Salt Lake has found success with a range of Hail to Reason line horses. He has a grade one winner out of mare by Southern Halo (by Halo) and stakes winners out of mares by Stop the Music, and Red Ransom and Kris S., both sons of Roberto.
From the Seattle Slew branch of the Bold Ruler line, Salt Lake is sire of stakes winners out of mares by Capote and Tsunami Slew, he should also be good with mares descending from Bold Ruckus (sire of Beau Genius), a son of Seattle Slew’s grandsire, Boldnesian. Salt Lake also has stakes winners out of Bold Ruler line mares who are by
Farma Way (from the What a Pleasure branch of the Bold Ruler line) and Air Forbes Won (by Bold Forbes, by Irish Castle).
Salt Lake is a Northern Dancer line sire, but has been very successful when crossed back over other branches of Northern Dancer. He has done particularly well with mares from the Nijinsky II branch of Northern Dancer. This includes a grade one winner out of a mare by Strawberry Road, and stakes winners out of mares by Green Dancer and his son Oak Dancer, and Baldski. He also has a stakes winner out of mare by Palace Music (by Nijinsky II’s three-parts-brother The Minstrel). Salt Lake also has a grade one winner out of a mare by Kitwood (by Nureyev), and graded stakes winners out of mares by Topsider and Equalize (by Northern Jove) and Danzig Connection (by Danzig). Northern Dancer is a son of Nearctic, and Nearctic is also sire of Northern Dancer’s three-quarters relative, Icecapade. Salt Lake has stakes winners out of mares descending from Icecapade through Wild Again and Phone Trick.
Salt Lake is out of a mare from the Olden Times branch of the War Relic line, and he has sired a stakes winner out of Proud Appeal (by Valid Appeal) from the In Reality branch of that line. He should also work over the Relaunch branch of In Reality, and this is available in California through Bertrando and Cee’s Tizzy.
The Deputy Minister line has worked well with Prince John line mares, and Salt Lake has a stakes winner out of a mare by Meadowlake (by Hold Your Peace, by Speak John). From the Ribot line Salt Lake has stakes winners out of mares descending through Arts and Letters (sire of Codex and granddam of Lost Code) and Hoist the Flag.
Salt Lake has stakes winners out mares from the Tom Fool line, out of mares descending through Buckpasser (out of a Spend a Buck dam) and Tri Jet (sire of Copelan). He has a stakes winner bred on the very successful cross of Deputy Minister line sires over Damascus line mares (out of a mare by Private Terms, by Private Account). Salt Lake is sire of grade one winner Ordway out of a mare by Vaguely Noble, a Hyperion line stallion, and Salt Lake also has a graded stakes winner from the Forli branch of the Hyperion line. We can also note Salt Lake siring stakes winners out of mares stemming from the Caro and Never Bend branches of the Nasrullah line, and out of mares by Hatchet Man (by The Axe II, also sire of Al Hattab) and Quadratic, who are both from the male line of Mahmoud.
