MAY 31, 2010 - CHECK THE LABEL WEAVES WAY TO SANDS POINT WIN as reported by Jack Shinar and Bloodhorse.com
Check the Label burst through an opening between horses in a crowded stretch to win the $150,000 Sands Point Stakes (gr. IIT) (VIDEO) over the Belmont Park inner turf course May 31.
The 1 1/8-mile test for 3-year-old fillies preceded the Metropolitan Handicap (gr. I) on the Belmont Park program. Graham Motion, who trains Check the Label, won the Eatontown Handicap (gr. IIIT) with Gypsy's Warning at Monmouth Park just a moment after Check the Label's 1 1/2-length triumph over Crescenda in the Sands Point. The final time was 1:47.16 over a firm course. Favored Negligee finished third.
"She’s a really nice filly who’s improving, too," Motion said. "I thought at the top of the stretch she might be in trouble, but she is good enough that she was able to overcome it. This filly has changed more than any other I have in the barn; she just keeps getting better, so it’s really exciting. I really haven’t looked beyond this race. We have plenty of options.”
Ridden patiently by Ramon Dominguez, Check the Label stalked the pace in fourth at the rail as Ultimate Class, shadowed by More Is Better and Negligee, showed the way through even fractions of :23.69, :47.15, and 1:10.76.
Check the Label had nowhere to go in upper stretch and was steadied by Dominguez, but room finally appeared approaching mid-stretch after Ultimate Class gave way. Check the Label responded gamely to split rivals and got the advantage over Negligee, ridden by John Velazquez.
She outran the fast-closing Crescenda, rallying from last at the middle of the track with Eibar Coa aboard, to win comfortably in the end.
“At the three-eighths there was a little bit of concern because I knew (Ultimate Class and More is Better) wouldn’t necessarily keep going, and sure enough I found myself on heels, trying to find a way through," Dominguez said. "I was just pleased that after having to check my filly she was able to be there for me.”
Crescenda ran second by 2 1/4 lengths over Negligee, who weakened in the final sixteenth.
Brereton C. Jones' homebred Check the Label earned her fourth win in 11 starts and boosted her earnings to $253,927. The bay daughter of Stormin Fever --Don't Trick Her, by Mazel Trick, won the one-mile Appalachian Stakes (gr. IIIT) at Keeneland in her last start April 15.
Sent off as the second choice, Check the Label carried co-top weight of 121 pounds and paid $7.40, $3.80, and $2.80 while keying a $75 exacta. Crescenda, in her stakes debut for trainer Michael McDonald, returned $9.50 and $5.10 in her fourth lifetime start. Two-to-one choice Negligee, a grade I winner over Keeneland's Polytrack making her second turf start for trainer John Terranova, was $2.60 to show.
Khancord Kid finished fourth, followed by More Is Better, Hit it Rich, and Ultimate Class. Strike It Rich was scratched.
MAY 23, 2010 - BIOFUEL POPULAR WINNER OF LA LORGNETTE by Jack Shinar of Bloodhorse.com
With a confident ride from Eurico Da Silva, heavily favored Biofuel registered her fourth win in five starts over Woodbine's Polytrack in the $158,370 La Lorgnette Stakes May 23. VIDEO
Breaking from the rail, Da Silva allowed Canada's champion 2-year-old filly of 2009 to drop back to last in the 1 1/16-mile test for 3-year-olds. Rounding the far turn, Biofuel circled the field six wide, rallying smartly to overtake Ernfold in the final sixteenth of a mile en route to a one-length triumph. Biofuel, ridden out to the wire as the 3-10 choice in the field of seven, was timed in 1:45.49.
The stalking Ernfold was a clear second under jockey James McAleney, finishing two lengths in front of pacemaker Moment of Majesty and Robert Landry.
Witch's Coven and Moment of Majesty showed the way early through slow quarter-mile fractions of :25.34 and :50.21 before Ernfold, advancing at the rail, took the lead late on the backstretch while completing six furlongs in 1:14.55. Ernfold opened up a two-length lead in the stretch but could not contain the winner.
"I was confident I was riding the best horse. I was just asking her to be patient," Da Silva said. "She was just breezing (in the stretch). She's a great horse."
Biofuel, a Brereton C. Jones homebred trained by Reade Baker, won the six-furlong Star Shoot Stakes by two lengths in her first start of the year April 10 at Woodbine. The Kentucky-bred daughter of Stormin Fever also won last year's Mazarine Stakes (Can-III) over the surface last fall before finishing a fast-closing fourth despite trouble in the stretch run of the Grey Goose Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies (gr. I) at Santa Anita Nov. 6.
All of Biofuel's wins in a seven-race career have come at Woodbine. She earned $84,942 for the La Lorgnette victory and has now banked $480,018 in her career.
The winning bay filly is out of the Indian Charlie mare Ms. Cornstalk.
Biofuel carried top weight of 120 pounds and paid $2.60, $2.1,0 and $2.10 while topping a $6.90 exacta with the graded stakes-placed Ernfold. Jim and Susan Hill's Ontario-bred runner-up, a Stormy Atlantic filly trained by Roger Attfield, returned $3 and $2.60. Moment of Majesty was $3.30 to show.
Then came Empire Spring, Tee Game, Redverse and Witch's Coven.
APRIL 15, 2010 - CHECK THE LABEL CAPTURES APPALACHIAN STAKES as reported by Jason Shandler of Bloodhorse.com
Brereton Jones’ Check the Label took over from odds-on favorite Rose Catherine approaching the eighth-pole and pulled clear under Julien Leparoux for a three-quarters of a length victory in the $100,000 Appalachian Stakes (gr. IIIT) for 3-year-old fillies April 15 at Keeneland.
A homebred daughter of Stormin Fever —Don’t Trick Her, by Mazel Trick, Check the Label scored her first stakes victory and hit the winner’s circle for the first time in four starts this season. She is trained by Graham Motion.
Breaking from post 7 in a field of eight, Check the Label raced in fourth through the early going while 3-5 choice Rose Catherine set the pace. Winner of the Sweet Life Stakes at Santa Anita last out, Rose Catherine took the field around in splits of :23.07, :46.02, and 1:10.64 under Garrett Gomez. But longshot Go Ask Alex softened up the leader, pressing her much of the way in the one-mile turf event.
By the time Rose Catherine cut the corner she was beginning to tire, and Check the Label, who had advanced three-wide around turn, was poised to take over. The bay filly took a 1 1/2-length lead with a furlong remaining and opened up a commanding lead before holding off a late run from Bay To Bay. The final time over the firm turf was 1:34.87.
Bay to Bay and Javier Castellano were runner-up, 4 3/4 lengths in front of Rose Catherine. Orchestrator was fourth.
Check the Label broke her maiden on the Colonial Downs turf last summer and won a first-level allowance contest in November at Churchill Downs. She was runner-up in the Coconut Grove Stakes at Gulfstream Park two starts back and entered the Appalachian with a fourth-place effort in the March 6 Herecomesthebride (gr. III).
The winner improved to 3-2-1 from 10 starts and has now earned $163,927.
Sent off as the second choice, Check the Label paid $11.20, $5.80, and $2.80. The exacta (7-5) was $54.60 and the trifecta (7-5-1) returned $150.80.
Prior to the Appalachian, jockey James Graham earned the 1,000th win of his career by scoring consecutive wins at the Lexington track. Graham, 30, earned his milestone victory aboard Green Lantern Stables' Mint Chip in the seventh race.
APRIL 13, 2010 - ALAN PORTER COMMENTS
In Canada, and from the Storm Cat line, comes three-year-old filly BIOFUEL, who won the Star Shoot Stakes. A two-year-old standout (who incidentally ran a bang-up fourth in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile (G1) after getting a bad bump at the eigth pole), Biofuel (TrueNicks A++) is by Stormin Fever, who is now in California. She's one of two stakes winners by sons of Storm Cat out of mares by Indian Charlie. We've been looking for Indian Charlie and Storm Cat to combine, as Indian Charlie's broodmare sire, Leo Castelli, is by Sovereign Dancer, a Northern Dancer/Bold Ruler cross, like Storm Cat. There are also three stakes winners from 40 starters by sons of Storm Cat out of mares by In Excess (the sire of Indian Charlie), which is pretty reasonable given the sires involved, so Stormin Fever/In Excess might turn out to be a worthwile West Coast experiment. By the way, both Storm Cat sons with stakes winners out of Indian Charlie mares are Storm Cat/Seattle Slew crosses, maybe Seattle Slew playing into In Excess propensity for Frizette?
APRIL 10, 2010 - BIOFUEL IMPRESSES IN COMEBACK as reported by Ron Gierkink of Daily Racing Forum
Biofuel, Canada's co-champion 2-year-old filly last year along with Negligee, won her season debut with an impressive wide rally at Woodbine in the $157,000 Star Shoot Stakes. VIDEO
Biofuel ($4.80) trailed the five-horse field heading into the turn as favored Wild Forest Cat set moderate fractions of 22.90 and 46.02 seconds in the six-furlong sprint for 3-year-old fillies.
Biofuel commenced her bid inside the quarter pole under jockey Eurico Da Silva and hit the front at the eighth pole before drawing away for a two-length tally in 1:10.01. Sharp Secretary outran Tee Game for second, and Wild Forest Cat faded to fourth.
"She has so much power," said Da Silva. "When I asked her, she accelerated. Believe me. I had a lot more horse under me."
Trained by Reade Baker, Biofuel banked $90,000 for owner/breeder Brereton Jones.
It was Biofuel's first start since her troubled fourth-place finish Nov. 6 in the Grade 1 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies at Santa Anita, during which she was sideswiped in the stretch by Negligee.

Consigned by John O'Hara, agent, the dark bay colt is out of Rainbow's End (Siphon {Brz}). He blazed a furlong in :09 4/5 at the sale's under tack preview.

MARCH 24, 2010 - GETTING WARMER...as reported by TDN Headline News
Certain to appreciate getting away from the likes of D'Funnybone (D'wildcat) is A Little Warm (Stormin Fever), who finished runner-up to that rival in the FEb. 20 GII Hutcheson S. Campaigned by Ned Evans, the homebred is poised to make his first start since that effort in this weekend's Louisiana Derby. Trainer Tony Dutrow remains cautiously optimistic about his colt's chances.
"There is a question mark with his ability to get an addded distance of ground," said Dutrow. "But he's a very nice colt and we're looking forward to his race in the Louisiana Derby this weekend. I don't know what is going to happen, but I do know that we are putting a nice colt in the gate that day."
The Virginia-bred finished first or second in three of four starts at two, including a 10 3/4-length romp sprinting at Philly Park Nov. 23. In his seasonal debut, the colt scored in a sloppy edition of the six-furlong Spectacular Bid S. at Gulfstream Jan. 9 before failing to catch the fleet-footed freight train D'Funnybone in the Hutcheson.
Asked why he opted for this spot over some of the other East Coast sophomore preps available over the next two weeks, Dutrow said, "The timing was very good, in terms of the length of time since his last race and going forward. It is a graded race, and it is a lot of money. Also, Fair Grounds is a very good racetrack and the surface is very good. All these elements kind of made it an easy decision to race here."
Does Dutrow think the homebred will be able to handle the step up in distance?
"We know we are in unchartered waters here," he admitted. "Could there have been a safer way to approach this? Yes, there probably could have been a more conservative way to do this, but we think we have a quality horse, and if he's able to get the distance, he is going to run well. We're taking our chances going a mile and an eighth."
FEBRUARY 20, 2010 - STILL ON THE DERBY TRAIL
Proving that he is still a contender for the Derby, A Little Warm placed a closing second to D'Funnybone at the Hutcheson Stakes G2 on Saturday, February 20th.
The 3-year-old colt by Stormin Fever sat off the pace before shifting into high gear going into the far turn. Having to swing wide to avoid getting bumped, the colt, owned by Edward P. Evans and trained by Anthony Dutrow, blazed down the center of the track to finish nose to tail to D'Funnybone.

A LITTLE WARM
This 3-year-old son of Stormin Fever broke his maiden at Philadelphia Park by more than 10 lengths back in November. He then came away a length and a half winner, over a sloppy track, in his 2010 debut in The Spectacular Bid Stakes at Gulfstream on January 9th at Gulfstream.
Because The Spectacular Bid is run over 6 furlongs extrapolating this horse's performance over the 10 furlong distance of The Kentucky Derby can be a little dicey but I liked his running style in the Spectacular Bid as he was content to layoff the real speed balls in the race. In addition, there are some significant stamina influences in his pedigree. His sire, Stormin' Fever, was 2nd in the Philip H. Iselin H.-G2 run over 9 furlongs and he has sired the likes Sweet Talker and Tarlow, both Grade 1 winners over 9 furlongs. The fact that he is out of an Alydar mare should help too.
The fact that A Little Warm performed so well on an off-track is no small matter either, we all know how notoriously fickle the weather can be during the first Saturday in May.
Here's a video link for the race:
OCTOBER 20, 2009 - STORMIN FEVER TOPS THE CHARTS
The weekend of October 11th has been full of good news for Golden Eagle Farm's resident stallion, Stormin Fever. Stormin Fever, son of the immortal Storm Cat, had five two-year-old winners in just four days making his total two-year-old winners for 2009 a whopping twelve (12)! Stormin Fever is now California's Leading Juvenile Sire.
Additionally, Stormin Fever has had two G3 stakes winners in the last month. One of these outstanding winners is the two-year-old filly BIOFUEL, out of the Indian Charlie mare Ms. Cornstalk. She put forth an incredible performance to upset the field at Woodbine on October 10th. Though she has been quiet since she broke her maiden in July, this filly returned with a vengeance in her come from behind win in the Mazarine Stakes. Trained by Reade Baker and owned by Brereton C. Jones, BIOFUEL has bumped her to date earnings to $184,436.
Stormin Fever is on fire in the statistics and his success doesn't show any signs of slowing. Golden Eagle Farm is eagerly watching to see what great achievements he will have next!
OCTOBER 10, 2009 - BIOFUEL WINS G3 MAZARINE STAKES as reported by Ron Gierkink - Daily Racing Form
ETOBICOKE, Ontario -- Biofuel ($48.20) circled five wide into contention on the far turn before drawing away for a surprisingly easy victory in the $241,200 Mazarine Stakes at Woodbine on Saturday (watch race replay).
The Grade 3 Mazarine often helps to determine the Canadian champion 2-year-old filly, but Negligee may have secured that award already after her victory in Saturday's Grade 1 Alcibiades at Keeneland. Biofuel finished fourth behind Negligee in the Aug. 15 Ontario Debutante Stakes and was coming off a seventh-place finish on turf in the Grade 3 Natalma Stakes.
"She didn't like the turf at all," said Eurico Da Silva, who rode Biofuel in both the Ontario Debutante and the Mazarine. "When she got back to the Poly, she ran great."
Resentless set honest fractions in the 1 1/16-mile event, while Biofuel trailed the eight-horse field on the backstretch. Biofuel loomed into contention on the far turn and then blew by favored Cascading at the top of the stretch en route to a 4 1/2-length win in a time of 1:44.47.
Bay to Bay finished a clear second, and Witch's Coven rallied to outrun a fading Resentless for third.
Biofuel, trained by Reade Baker, banked $150,000 for owner/breeder Brereton Jones.
